Vegetable Garden |
Vegetable Garden is a type of garden where we grow plants not just for decorative purpose but also for our vegetable requirements. Having a well-designed vegetable garden in your backyard will give you an easy access to fresh and hygienic vegetables through out the years.
If you are planning to have a vegetable garden of your own containing a variety of green vegetables, aromatic herbs and fresh fruits, you would have to plan well and take into consideration a number of factors to produce a bountiful yield each year. There can be any number of vegetable garden plans but your own planning should be based strictly on your requirements and available resources.
First of all, think of the place where you would actually like to do vegetable gardening. It should be an open area with lots of sunlight during the daytime. It is best to select a location that opens to south so as to provide maximum sunlight to the plants. Avoid areas where the ground is sandy or gravel or may be hit by flood quite frequently.
Equally important is the determination of your vegetable garden size, which mostly depends on the space available to you as well as your family requirements.
Next you will have to look for the method of planting vegetables, such as to decide whether you would like to plant in raised beds or in open soil. Raised beds are preferable because they are helpful in keeping soil warmer for a longer time. It is also easy to provide drainage to a raised bed vegetable garden. You can use wood frames, concrete, decorative stones etc to build separate raised beds for different kinds of vegetable plants.
Then you will need to check the condition of soil in your garden and prepare it well for the kinds of plants you have chosen. You can check its PH value and decide whether it is acidic or alkaline. You can then add in it appropriate amount of organic humus, such as compost, fertilizer, manure or peat moss to make it suitable for the proper development of your plants. Container vegetable gardening is also a popular practice for areas where good soil is rare or you have little time to spare for vegetable garden soil preparation.
Next comes the stage to choose the crops and decide upon their amount to grow. You will have to take into account the eating habits of your family as well as the local condition and resources available to you. You will also take guidance from vegetable gardening books, seasoned gardeners and other resources available for beginners. They will also provide you a useful channel for you to get easy access to gardening tips, pictures, list of local stores for quality seeds and plants etc.
Last but not the least comes your vegetable garden design and layout, which greatly affect you chances of having a good yield every year. You should design your garden in such a way as to allow the plantation of taller plants like peas, corn and beans only on the northern side of the plantation area.

This is in order to avoid shade for the rest of crops and provide appropriate level of sunlight to every member of your garden. Arrange your plants in rows that run north and south and follow crop rotation to better the yield of your produce.
